Today the Service Employees International Union of Florida (SEIU Florida) proudly announced its endorsement of United for Care’s ballot initiative, which will allow Florida voters the chance to vote on medical marijuana in November 2016. In the 2014 election, the SEIU supported United for Care and Amendment 2, which received 58% in that election.
SEIU Florida represents over 55,000 active and retired healthcare professionals, public employees, and property service workers in the state. SEIU Florida’s members provide crucial services in hospitals, nursing homes, public schools, community colleges, municipal and county governments, malls, and universities across the state.
“We are honored to again receive the support of the SEIU,” said Ben Pollara, Campaign Manager at United for Care. “The endorsement from the union representing the largest number of healthcare workers in the State is particularly rewarding. We will proudly fight alongside SEIU Florida to secure the rights of doctors and their patients with debilitating conditions to make medical decisions without having to live like criminals.”
A representative of the SEIU Florida State Council expressed her support for both United for Care and the new proposed amendment.
“The Use of Marijuana for Debilitating Medical Conditions ballot initiative is about compassion and quality of care for patients. There are hundreds of thousands of very sick Floridians who will find relief due to this comprehensive proposal. There are 24 other states that have a medical marijuana law; United for Care is doing the right thing for Florida..............http://www.theweedblog.com/florida-medical-marijuana-campaign-receives-seiu-florida-endorsement/

??At Your Own Risk?? Warning From Detroit To Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

The Compassion Chronicles told you that 211 Detroit medical marijuana facilities have been put on notice by the city’s Law Department that they are subject to police action for their continued operation after March 31. The notice came in a letter addressed by attorney Melvin ‘Butch’ Hollowell of Detroit’s Corporation Counsel; we have finally obtained a copy of that letter (see attached images below).
Hollowell does not mince words in the letter.
“I am writing to you to give you advisory notice that this location has been identified as conducting business activities pertaining to medical marihuana in a commercial building,” the letter begins.
After outlining the procedures and policies regarding medical marijuana distribution facilities, Hollowell get straight to the threatening.
“Commercial locations conducting medical marihuana activities that are located in a “Drug Free Zone” will not be permitted.” (emphasis included in original document)
“Continued operation of commercial locations conducting medical marihuana activities… without required City of Detroit approvals for licensing and zoning is “at your own risk.”” (emphasis and italics included in the original document)
Hollowell outlines the penalties distribution centers face from the city if the described activities are not halted. They include “civil and criminal penalties, including ticketing, fines, confiscation of illegal marihuana and paraphernalia, arrest or closure order.“ (emphasis and italics included in the original document)
Hollowell states the ordinances will be enforced by officers of the Detroit Police Department and members of the building safety division of Detroit city government.
The letters were referenced in a.................... http://www.theweedblog.com/at-your-own-risk-warning-from-detroit-to-medical-marijuana-dispensaries/

Former IRS Agent to Face Trial for Bribing Pot Dispensary Owner

A former IRS agent in Seattle is set to face trial this week on accusations that he solicited and received a $20,000 bribe from a medical marijuana dispensary.
Federal prosecutors say that after Paul G. Hurley audited Have A Heart Compassion Care in Seattle last year, he told its owner, Ryan Kunkel, that he owed $290,000 on his 2013 and 2014 taxes. But, they say, Hurley told Kunkel it could have been a lot worse: Hurley had saved him $1 million.
As Kunkel described it, the IRS agent rubbed his fingers together and suggested that in return for the leniency, Kunkel should pay off his student loan debt over time, court documents allege. Kunkel said that sounded like a bad idea, but fearing his audit would be held up, he agreed to pay Hurley $20,000 cash.
He said he changed his mind after consulting with his security guard, who told him to talk to a lawyer and law enforcement. Kunkel then reported Hurley's actions to the U.S. Attorney's Office and agreed to..........http://www.hightimes.com/read/former-irs-agent-face-trial-bribing-pot-dispensary-owner

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Mormon church has come out against a Utah bill that would allow the medical use of edible pot products, a position that could be a serious blow to one of two medical marijuana proposals before state lawmakers.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said leaders are worried about the unintended consequences of the measure proposed by Republican Sen. Mark Madsen of Eagle Mountain. A majority of Utah lawmakers are members of the Salt Lake City-based faith, and the church's position on an issue can be..............http://www.hightimes.com/read/mormon-church-comes-out-against-utah-medical-marijuana-bill

Grow Hack: Understanding the Flowering Cycle for Higher Yields

Flowering is controlled by a plant’s natural response to light called photoperiodism. This complex process of interacting factors plays a pivotal role in reproduction, fruit and grain production, etc. Indeed, the entire world’s food supply relies on photoperiodism as much as it relies on the Sun rising every morning. Despite it’s fundamental importance to Life on Earth, the science behind this phenomenon remains mostly a mystery.
Scientists don’t know everything there is to know about how changes in day length induce flowering in plants, but the bits and pieces we do know have helped gardeners grow better pot more efficiently for decades. Don’t keep yourself in the dark; this added knowledge could help to...........http://www.hightimes.com/read/grow-hack-understanding-flowering-cycle-higher-yields

The local chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (Greater St. Louis NORML) announces a Drug War Victims Vigil to take place on Friday, the 12th of February 2016 at the St. Louis County Justice Center at 100 S. Central, Clayton, Missouri 63105. Members, supporters, and victims will gather outside the county jail from 11:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. to peacefully protest the arrest and incarceration of marijuana users. The vigil will continue at the Mel Carnahan Criminal Courthouse at 1114 Market Street in the City of St. Louis from 4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
Greater St. Louis NORML is calling for a total reform of marijuana laws, especially in situations that are non-violent and victimless in nature. NORMLs mission is to move public opinion sufficiently to achieve the repeal of marijuana prohibition so that the responsible use of cannabis by adults is no longer subject to penalty.
The continued prohibition of marijuana costs the federal government approximately twenty-one billion dollars annually with a total cost over seventy years of approximately three hundred billion dollars. The greatest harm caused by marijuana prohibition is the effect of prohibition itself – the governmental expense, the stigma of arrest and loss of...........http://www.theweedblog.com/greater-st-louis-norml-announces-17th-annual-drug-war-victims-vigil-this-friday/

Popular Marijuana Pesticide Pulled From Store Shelves, Banned In Oregon

I don’t currently grow marijuana, but I did for a handful of years. I always tell people that there are three plagues that should be dealt with swiftly and completely when growing marijuana – bugs, heat, and mildew. There are a lot of battles that will be fought while growing marijuana, but those three were the toughest to deal with. Powdery mildew is especially harsh in the Pacific Northwest where I live because of so much rain. We don’t deal with heat all that often, but it does happen during the summer during some stretches.
Bugs for the most part are a universal problem that plagues every geographical area. Spider mites seem to be the most common nuisance, but there are of course others that like to feed on marijuana plants. The best thing to do is avoid getting bugs to begin with, but that’s easier said than done, especially for newbie growers. Once bugs are discovered, they need to be taken care of immediately. Growers don’t............http://www.theweedblog.com/popular-marijuana-pesticide-pulled-from-store-shelves-banned-in-oregon/

High NY: The Next Generation Of Cannabis Leaders

I came across a cool event today. It’s an event geared towards the next generation of cannabis leaders, which is something that I always support. I was once a young activist, and it’s only because of the efforts and mentoring from previous generations of activists that I’ve been able to navigate a gauntlet of chaos that is the life of an activist. We need to always be looking to fill the ranks with the next generation of activists, and I think this event is going to help with that. It makes me smile thinking of how many young people will go away from this event with a new found passion for drug reform. The legendary Betty Aldworth will be there, and you should be too! Below is more information about the event, via the event’s Eventbrite page:
Event Description
High NY, New York’s largest community of cannabis activists, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts, is thrilled to feature two prominent guest speakers who are doing tremendous work in developing the next generation of cannabis leaders:
Betty Aldworth is the Executive Director of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, an international non-profit advocacy and education organization focused on reforming drug policy. A veteran of the medical cannabis community, Betty served as the advocacy director for Colorado’s 2012 Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol-the committee responsible for legalizing, taxing and regulating marijuana for adults in Colorado.
Marc J. Ross is a founding partner of Sichenzia Ross Friedman Ference LLP. Mr. Ross represents clients (public and private companies, brokerage firms, registered representatives, high net-worth individuals, and hedge funds) throughout the United States, North America, Asia, Europe and Israel. Shinnecock Indian Nation Is Getting Into The New York Medical Marijuana Industry

Near the end of 2014 the Obama Administrative released a memo that stated that if Native American tribes decided to legalize medical and/or recreational marijuana, that they would be allowed to do so without federal interference. Since that time a handful of tribes have announced that they are pursuing ventures. The latest of those is the Shinnecock Indian Nation in New York. New York’s medical marijuana industry just started, so this is very significant news. Per Marijuana Business Daily:
It looks like New York’s five medical cannabis companies will have some more competition by the end of the year. At least, they will on Long Island.
The Shinnecock Indian Nation, which has a reservation on the eastern part of Long Island, has decided to get into the MMJ business, according to the Southampton Press. The tribe plans on growing and selling MMJ by the end of the year.
But the Shinnecocks won’t necessarily have a competitive advantage, since the ordinance the tribal council approved includes a requirement that the operation be governed by state law. That means no smokable MMJ, and they’ll have to be careful to ensure that each customer is a registered patient.
The ordinance is limiting in many ways, but the tribe still has a huge advantage on other entities involved in New York’s medical marijuana industry. Other companies had to pay enormous sums to compete for a just a handful of licenses. The Shinnecock Indian Nation didn’t have to compete during that process, and so their start-up costs will be..............http://www.theweedblog.com/shinnecock-indian-nation-is-getting-into-the-new-york-medical-marijuana-industry/

There is a rally occurring in West Virginia on Wednesday. American veterans deserve to use medical cannabis and shouldn’t be forced to use harmful pharmaceuticals if they don’t want to. Below is more information about the rally via the event’s Facebook page:

We are uniting at the West Virginia State Capitol Building on Wednesday, February 10th, 2016 to call on our state legislators to act now to allow VA medical centers in our state to recommend medical cannabis to WV veterans.
Let us know if you need help getting down to Charleston on the 26th. We will try to work out as much carpooling as possible. Comment or send an e-mail to W[email protected]
The United States Senate passed a funding bill in November, ending the prohibition of medical cannabis at VA clinics. The 2016 Appropriations Bill permits Veterans Administration doctors to recommend marijuana to their patients in states where medical cannabis is legal. The problem is, West Virginia is not one of those states. We will gather at the capitol and demand the WV Legislature grant equal access to veterans in our state.

If you are near Oregon’s capital today and don’t have to work, you should attend the cannabis lobby day. This is going to be a very, very important session, and Oregon’s legislators need to hear from cannabis patients and supporters. There are a lot of proposed changes to the OMMP this session, with more on the way I’m sure. Be heard. If you can’t attend the lobby day, make sure to write your elected officials and let them know how important it is to keep the OMMP intact while Measure 91 is being implemented. Below is more info about the event, via the event’s Facebook page:
Come join our rally and let your voice be heard! Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH), along with several other cannabis organizations, will be participating in Cannabis Lobby Day at the Oregon State Capitol on Monday, February 8, 2016. Barney Frank To The Marijuana Industry: ???Thank You For Being Responsible???

Today was one of those days that I had to pinch myself because I felt so lucky. I got to attend a brunch fundraiser for legendary United States Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), who has fought for the cannabis reform movement for a very long time, and continues that support as more states allow a thriving cannabis industry to exist by leading the charge in Congress. The fundraiser was hosted by the National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA). Speaking at the fundraiser was another individual that led the charge for many, many years in Congress. That individual was former Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA).
I have never heard Barney Frank give a speech before, and definitely haven’t heard him talk now that he is out of Congress. Mr. Frank was known for being outspoken in Congress, and now that he is retired I was expecting some particularly candid opinions to be shared. The speech was nothing short of epic. Barney Frank has a way of getting to the point extremely quickly, and in a way that leaves no doubt as to how strongly Mr. Frank feels about the subject.
He started off his speech talking about how he is more of a ‘counter puncher’ when it comes to debates, and that he always found it easy to debate the issue of.................http://www.theweedblog.com/barney-frank-to-the-marijuana-industry-thank-you-for-being-responsible/
